Product Review: 2009 Topps Heritage High Numbers

I was not quite sure what to expect from this year's High Number edition of Topps Heritage. Last year, with 2008 Topps Heritage High Numbers, I was disappointed with two major things: 1) the inclusion of two Topps Updates and Highlights cards per pack (that I ended up giving away) and 2) the stamping of the original cards inserted one per two boxes -- c'mon Topps why are you continuing to do this??? Unfortunately, Topps continues both of these trends with the 2009 High Numbers. Another trend that Topps continues in the High Numbers that was seen with the 2009 Topps Heritage edition is having a weak autograph lineup. As I have said before, I miss the days of getting on card autographs of hall of famers.

The thrill of looking forward to opening Heritage definitely decreased for me this year. I did open a few boxes but did not get anything of great value. Topps continues to come up with gimmicks to the tune of several super shortprinted cards in this set. Why is Topps doing this you may ask? Well, if you think about it, it does not cost the company any money to make these "error" cards and it does cost them to secure quality autographs. Remember the error craze of 1989-1991? I remember 1989 Upper Deck Dale Murphy error cards selling for $200 each! It is smart for Topps to do this and dumb on our part to continue to buy this product. I will be giving Topps Heritage another chance for redemption (speaking of which, I hope they stop with these redemption cards too!) in 2010 as they will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Topps Heritage brand. Rumor has it that there will be a better autograph line up including Carl Yastrzemski. One can only hope...

Meanwhile, if you are looking to complete any Topps Heritage set, please look at my web site. I offer base cards, inserts, and other Topps Heritage cards at really good prices:
